Personal Thoughts

With Halloween right around the corner, scary movie talk in the air, and Paranormal Activity 3 breaking records at the box office, I didn't have much difficulty deciding to make it the topic of choice in this post ... and when you also consider the fact that I just recently covered PA1 and PA2 ... it makes PA3 the perfect film for movie recommendation number 26.

I've decided once again to let my wife tackle this one (as with Paranormal Activity 2) ... So without further ado;

I wanted to start things off by saying, I found it interesting how the movie (SPOILER) either changed, or left out a lot of the creepy parts seen in the official trailer(s) ... I saw 4 different trailers, all consisting of a lot of things not found in the actual movie.

Initially, I was extremely happy that they were going to make a prequel explaining the origins of why this demon/spirit was so personally attached to Katie and Kristi ... I was curious to know what started it all!

When I saw the trailer (which scared the crap out of me by the way) I was interested in how the film seemed as though it would use the Bloody Mary game as the reason for why these paranormal events began. I said to myself, that's cool, a majority of kids have heard and/or have played the Bloody Mary game (as I had as a kid) ... taking the movie/series in this direction may not be a bad thing ... but I also questioned how it would possibly tie into the back story already presented in PA2. Nevertheless, the synopsis presented above (taken from Netflix) and the storyline presented in the actual movie are totally different.

Moving along, I always like going to the theater to see scary movies with a full crew! With scary movies, I love being there when it's packed because I know folks will be screaming, yelling at the screen or hollering! It makes the experience that much better. My game plan was, "I don't care where I sit just as long as it is next to the hubby so he can protect me" and that is exactly how it played itself out.

Overall, I think the movie was good ... it definitely has its creepy, scary moments (I hope this series takes over the once a year, Halloween scary movie thing Saw had going on). There were parts that had me excited and then there were parts that had me terrified. In this movie, we saw the demon/spirit/ghost (whatever you wanna call it) come into physical contact with nearly everyone. This is the kind of contact that would have scared the crap out of me, perhaps resulting in me being locked in a crazy house.

As a fan of the series, I'll say that I definitely enjoyed this movie (it did for me what I was hoping it would) however (in light of where the storyline appears to be headed) if they make too many wild changes/additions and stray to far from the plot of the original story, I may just end up losing interest altogether.

Movie Recommendation 26 - Overall Recommendation Number 29

Personal Thoughts

So I've decided to try something new for this post. I've chosen to involve my wife and allow her to post her thoughts on Paranormal Activity 2. I felt like she was probably more qualified to give an opinion on this seeing as, this is the kind of movie that really freaks her out!

My heart started racing, sweat beads began forming at my forehead and my throat got parched. This happened when I saw the trailer for Paranormal Activity 2 for the first time (I was at the theater to see Twilight)! When the wait was over, and we finally got a chance to see this one, I knew I'd be in for a rough ride!

The first Paranormal Activity had me excited that there was finally going to be a good documentary-style movie like this. I am a fan of shows such as Ghost Hunters and anything paranormal, so this was huge for me.

What I like about PA2 is that it includes more than two people, it involves a family (Kristie, Daniel, Ali and Hunter). PA2 centers around Kristie, the younger sister of Katie from the first movie, and is also set in the months before the events of the first movie ... so it's a prequel.

I really liked the onscreen chemistry of the actors in this movie, they really did act and feel like a legitimate family ... and with all the strange disturbances going on, I felt like the family's mixed reactions were pretty realistic. Daniel Rey (father) responded pretty much the same way my dad would have.

Let's get to the disturbances! This one had far more than it's predecessor and they started much earlier. The activity (in my opinion) is much more disturbing than the first movie. Seems like this demon or ghost has a game plan and a strategy ... it knows exactly who it wants, how it wants it and when it'll take it!

I think the Paranormal Activity series is a great idea. I like the back story and mystery behind the family (Katie and Kristi). They tastefully provide us with pieces of the puzzle, giving us information without giving us too much information. The last 20 minutes had me biting my nails, closing my eyes and burying my face in my husbands shoulders!

In Closing: Paranormal Activity 2 was fun, frightening, and entertaining, great for a date night movie (if she or he likes scary movies) and also great for a nice October evening, also known as Halloween time ... which is why I'm making this my 25th movie recommendation (28th overall recommendation).

Personal Thoughts

You either love it or you hate it! Much like the Blair Witch Project a decade earlier, this movie appears to have very little middle ground, and though many seem to lean more towards the negative with this film, I found myself swayed more towards the positive.

Plain and simple; I really enjoyed this film. It made me think, it made me experience, and it made me react, something most traditional scary movies (through the blatant use of masks, CGI and other various effects) often fail to do.

The plot: Katie believes there may be an evil presence (ghost or demon) in their southern California home. Micah (her cavalier boyfriend) sets up a video camera in attempts to prove or disprove the validity of these claims, only to the discover that there are indeed some strange and bizarre occurrences going on that defy logic and explanation. The movie is presented in a found footage/mockumentary style format.

"Paranormal Activity is too slow, it takes too long for "real" scary stuff to start happening ... Paranormal Activity isn't scary because it doesn't really show anything, wow a door moved, that's not scary" ... are some of the negative things I typically hear when discussing this movie, and that's fine considering the fact that people are different! This movie OBVIOUSLY (just like every other scary movie) will not scare everybody nor will it be entertaining to everybody, but for those who can appreciate the type of film that Paranormal Activity is, for those who are a bit more disturbed by things that feel a little more real and authentic (this movie felt like something we could have shot and experienced ourselves) then Paranormal Activity just may scare the socks off of you, and leave you talking about it days after experiencing it.

I enjoyed it because this movie in my opinion, did a good job of forcing me to experience the emotions of being isolated, alone, afraid, helpless and haunted, while offering up very little explanation as to way these things were happening, leaving my imagination to run wild and fill in the gaps (and I've always had a pretty vivid imagination)!

In Closing: Although Paranormal Activity kept me spooked, entertained and interested up to the very end, I understand that it won't be for everyone. Some will love it, and others will find it boring. Nevertheless, if you haven't seen it yet and you're a fan of creepy ghost movies, then checking it out may be worth your while. It may not be a bad idea to watch it at least once, (save it for a dark, cold scary night) because in so doing, you just may end up getting more than you bargained for, which is why I'm making this my 24th movie recommendation (27rd overall recommendation).

What I liked:

- The Characters
- The Concept
- The ending
- How the creators of the film were able to make a story (keeping me interested) out of really nothing (which was in many ways more effective than big budget horror films)
- How the film did a good job making me feel like I was apart of the experience

What I didn't like:

- The film can tend to be monotonous at times
- may not show enough for the true horror film
- May have a pacing too slow for the average horror fan
