Personal Thoughts

March 19 happens to be a special day for me, seeing as it's my birthday! "Happy Birthday to self!"

On March 19, 1999, a friend of mine got me Silent Hill (the very first Silent Hill released on the PS1) for my birthday, which (along with the X-Files) really helped jump start my love for supernatural/eerie games, shows and movies. I still remember that day ... cold, snow, gloom ... pretty much the perfect setting for a game like Silent Hill. That day, I started playing, and to this day, I haven't stopped!

Since I tend to subconsciously associate my birthday with Silent Hill (seems like I'm always playing through one of the games this time a year) I thought it would be fitting to save it for a Silent Hill recommendation ... which in this case, will be Silent Hill 2.

Silent Hill 2 in my opinion, lives up to the standard set by the first one (Silent Hill 1999), and is actually regarded by many as being the best Silent Hill of the series. It definitely goes down in my books as one of the greatest (if not the greatest) survival horror games ever made.

Though I find the Silent Hill 2 "Intro" Trailer (which can be seen above) to be interesting, I don't feel as though it provides viewers with a good enough sense of what the game is really about. How could it? It's obviously difficult to sum up 8-9 hours of game play in a short 4 minute video.

In any event, the setting's dark, the textures are grainy, the atmosphere creepy, the music daunting, the storyline unpredictable ... which made it just the perfect title for me. It wouldn't be appropriate to talk about Silent Hill 2 without having a few words to say about Pyramid Head! Pyramid Head (also known as the red pyramid thing), is the monster who stalks James Sunderland all throughout the already terrifying town of Silent Hill (as if things weren't bad enough). He's a scary dude, that's for sure ... and he's arguably the main antagonist of Silent Hill 2. For more information about Pyramid Head, please visit his profile links below.

Pyramid Head - Profile 2

Short of saying too much (saying something that could be deemed "spoiler") I'll stop talking and let you play this one for yourself ... if of course, you missed out on the experience. I actually played and defeated the "ported" XBox version (Silent Hill 2, Restless Dreams) and have not played the original PS2 version.

In closing, this game kept my heart racing, kept me afraid to traverse down dark corridors, made me scared to play with the lights off ... which is why I'm making this my first video game recommendation (seventh recommendation overall) ... For all you guys and girls out there looking for a good scary/creepy video game to play, this one's for you!

Yeah, so do I! I haven't played it in a while ... perhaps it's time to pull it off the shelf and give it another walk through.
