Synopsis

YOUR SMALLEST DECISIONS CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING

The Origami Killer has taken a new victim. In a terrorized city, the hunt for a child will lead four unconnected people to ask the same question: How far would you go to stop a killer? Play all four roles in this psychological thriller where every action you take has consequences. How this story unfolds is entirely up to you.

Personal Thoughts

Expanding on the fundamentals and principles set in 2005's acclaimed Fahrenheit (also known as Indigo Prophecy), Quantic Dream now delivers a game similar to its predecessor (functionality wise) but with the emphasis more on the psychological, with a serial killer style storyline, much in the vain of something you'd go to the movies to see.

One of Heavy Rain's promotional catch phrases is "In Heavy Rain you don’t watch the story – you play it." this statement, pans out to be very true. The best way to describe Heavy Rain is that it feels like a playable story, or an interactive cutscene, one where every decision made, either good or bad, has repercussions. (sometimes, serious repercussions). In this game, full on controllability is sacrificed for mood, ambience, and great story telling.

The game provides four playable characters, all in which can be killed off at some point in the game, if you're not careful, making the gaming experience emotional and even downright stressful at times. I proceeded through this game cautiously. I constantly found myself thinking about not making a decision that would get one of the characters permanently killed. And allowing a character to die will affect the ending you get. (It's been said that the game has something like 22 possible endings)

Heavy Rain may not be for everyone (I've read a few negative reviews), but it was definitely for me. I absolutely loved it, and wish more games like it existed out there in the video game world today. Imagine a playable, "choose your own adventure" style movie, with multiple endings. One where every decision, every choice, supposedly affects what ending you get. That's Heavy Rain in a nutshell. Everything that I typically look for in a movie from this genre (psychological thriller), this video game had.

It kept me interested, it kept me focused, and it kept me nervous over the thought of not knowing what to expect next. The game surpassed any expectations I had entering into it (I didn't really know what to expect to be honest), which is why I am making it my next recommendation. (second video game recommendation, 11th recommendation overall) If you play video games and you missed this one, give it a play through. You may find yourself playing through it more than once!

 What I liked:

- The fact that there's four playable characters, all in which can be killed off.
- The mood, setting, atmosphere (the rain and music makes it feel like a movie)
- The plot
- The ending (or should I say, multiple endings)
- The music (title theme)

What I didn't like:

- The controls can take some getting use to, and can feel a bit odd at times.

Personal Thoughts

It's the weekend, I have the day off, and I just got finished grillin' myself some burgers. Well now my stomach's satisfied, and I'm ready to relax and start my next movie recommendation. For this post, I've decided to go with the movie Mirrors.

Mirrors (directed by Alexandre Aja and starring Kiefer Sutherland) is a 2008 supernatural thriller based on the 2003 South Korean film, Into the Mirror.

"The film was originally scripted as a remake of the 2003 South Korean horror film Into the Mirror. However, once Aja was brought on board and read the script, he was dissatisfied with the particulars of the original film's story. Though he ended up retaining the original film's basic theme involving mirrors, and incorporating a few of its scenes, he otherwise chose to craft a new story and script for his version of the film." - Wikipedia

I think the whole "ghost in the mirror" concept is a rather frightening one, and judging by the amount of pressure I felt from my wife squeezing my arm while watching this movie, I think it's safe to say she agrees. Pulling from folklore, urban legend and several other ghost movies out there on the market (I noticed traces of The Ring), Mirrors feels like a compilation of many different things. It closely resembles an episode from the television series Supernatural, titled "Bloody Mary" -- (season 1 - episode 5).

"There is a great deal of folklore associated with mirrors, including the belief that the soul projects out of the body and into mirrors in the form of reflection. This belief underlies the most widely known mirror superstition; that breaking a mirror brings seven years of bad luck. Many cultures believe that breaking a mirror also breaks the soul of the one who broke it. The soul, angered at being hurt, exacts seven years of bad luck in payment for such carelessness. The Romans attributed the bad luck to their belief that life renews itself every seven years. To break mirror meant breaking one's health, and this could not be remedied for seven years. In some cultures, breaking a mirror was thought to presage a death in the family. This association of mirrors with death is common and stems from the belief that the soul can become trapped in the mirror. For this reason, children were often not allowed to look in a mirror until they were at least one year old. Mirrors were covered during sleep and illness so that the soul, in its wanderings, would not become trapped and unable to return to the body. After a death, mirrors were also covered to prevent the soul of the newly departed from becoming caught in the mirror, delaying its journey to the afterlife" - Article taken from Supernatural Wiki.

Some people are dealt a terrible hand in life, and Anna Esseker is definitely one of those people (you'll understand what I mean when you see this movie). As for the film itself, I personally enjoyed Mirrors (it can leave a person afraid to look in the mirror for days on end after watching it). And while it wasn't perfect (most horror movies are flawed in some way or another), it does have its share of frightening moments and disturbing images that will almost certainly please most ghost movie fanatics (and scare the socks off of the ladies). I like Kiefer Sutherland, and I thought his performance was solid in this one, and I'm also a fan of actresses Paula Patton and Amy Smart.

** SPOILER **
(Amy Smart got absolutely tore up from the floor up in this one)

The mood, setting and atmosphere is exactly what you'd expect from a modern day ghost movie ... dark, eerie, dingy, creepy ... the way I like it! The plot wasn't bad, but it definitely wasn't anything most people would consider worthy of an oscar. If you like these kind of movies, then you'll probably have no problems being entertained, and staying interested. To wrap things up, Mirrors is a good scary movie for one of those lazy nights you don't feel like leaving the house ... but if you're the type of person that scares easily, then it may be in your best interest to avoid watching it alone.

Personal Thoughts

Identity is a 2003 psychological thriller (made in the vain of a supernatural thriller), directed by James Mangold, starring John Cusack and Ray Liotta, along with a few other notable hollywood actresses and actors. It one of those movies that has all of the necessary ingredients for keeping viewers glued to the edge of their seats.

I remember the TV advertisement for this movie back when it was still playing in theaters. One of the punchlines was ... "Scarier Then The Ring" which is kind of why I was expecting a supernatural style story plot when I initially sat down to watch it for the first time. Needless to say, Identity didn't disappoint. From start to finish, this film had me on a dark, "whodunit" roller coaster ride, full of mystery and suspense, topped with a surprise ending!

The core of the movie takes place at an old rundown lookin' motel, on a dark and rainy night. The main characters are stranded (due to flooded roads and a nasty rainstorm) and if you haven't guessed by now, start being killed off one by one ... kind of in the vain of a teen scream movie. If I were talking to someone about this movie, and I had to name several things I thought it was similar to, Psycho, Shutter Island, and the board game Clue quickly comes to mind.

I thought the atmosphere was great, the acting was strong (I tend to like John Cusack, and I find myself checking out almost everything he's in), and the overall plot was good, which made for a good movie.  Though I enjoyed this movie, it does have its moments where you'll probably say to yourself, "oh give me a break ... that's unrealistic!"

The movie also casts actor Pruitt Taylor Vince, as a convicted murderer on death row. In case you don't know who he is, he's the guy I tend to refer to as the "crazy eyes man". He can be found in a bunch of movies and television series (Identity, Jacob's Ladder, The X-Files, The Cape ... just to name a few). Directors must love the crazy eye movement trick he does seeing as he seems to do it in everything he's in.

In closing, I don't wanna say too much and spoil anything ... this movie is full of psychological suspense and thrills, and like a puzzle, it'll have you trying to put together the pieces all the way up to the very end, which is why I'm making this my next recommendation. Check it out if you missed it, or if you haven't seen it in a while.
